Blessedly dirty garage rock – that’s how I’d describe Not Nothing, the new record from Xray Eyeballs. Sure, those two adjectives are rather contradictory, but I think they stick. The dirt comes from the heavy-duty lo-fi grime slathered all over these dark tunes, like something straight out of a ‘60s psychedelic horror movie (or a recent homage with tongue firmly in cheek). The blissful sensibilities arise straight from the Jesus And Mary Chain school of shoegaze: ample surf guitar rhythms, a rich dollop of fuzz, and a ready appreciation for a classic pop song. All told, I dig the overall tone of this album.
