I’ll be the first person to stand up and declare my affection for left-of-center experimental artists that seek to distend the normative and chart new territory. It might not all be any good (especially when someone gets convinced of his/her own genius), but I respect the desire to leave safe havens for something outside of the box. Yet, for all of that adventuring spirit, I will always have a very large space in my heart for well-crafted garage rock. As I hear it, there’s something refreshing about a style of music that always finds aggressive new ways to revisit, re-interpret, and re-invent very storied ideas and motifs. Maybe the best way to explore that vaunted “new territory” is to turn what you think you know inside out and start all over again.
