I’ve learned a few things in four or so years of regularly writing about music. Chief among them is that most people don’t like to read reviews that use the “I want to like this, but…” as their basic critical premise. No one wins in that circumstance: the band comes off looking weak, and the author looks lame and unoriginal. If you’re going to take a band to task for the whole being less than the sum of its parts, you had better provide some cogent examples. And this is the quandary that I face with Invisible Origins, the new record from Beaten By Them.
