I remain an advocate of young bands trying to make it on their own, sans record company. We live in a day and age where bands can create music, tour, and have a good time without the meddling fingers of executives hungry for the Next Big Thing. Thanks to the Internet, it’s become even easier to get word out about your music (the blogosphere, social networks, Bandcamp) and book your band a run of shows around your region of residence (most decent venues have some sort of online presence). Nevertheless, I do wish those same champions of the DIY aesthetic would occasionally find themselves a trusted mentor, producer, and/or friend, because, when it comes to putting the actual songs to tape, even the best bands need an editor.
