I’m known to bemoan openly my displeasure for how staid post-rock has become since its relative inception a decade ago. Linguistically, anytime you staple the prefix “post-“ to anything, you should be ready to talk about how you’re going to push that movement, belief, philosophy, historical period, and/or trend into the future. Unfortunately, all that post-rock has really done is remove vocals from the regular rock setup and found a way to make prog-lite sensibilities not so anathema to fans of traditional and “alternative” rock music. So, outside of the original harbingers of this sound, there are few bands out there really stretching the boundaries of what post-rock really could be.
