From the outset of the Herringbone EP, the trio that is Way Yes seems determined to convince the new-school afro-pop naysayers that not all of the white kids reinventing these sounds are overly serious nerds who’ve removed all of the joy from the music. To whit, these six songs call to mind the sort of music that the kid brothers of Vampire Weekend and Dirty Projectors might create if they were called upon to record a soundtrack for Yo Gabba Gabba. Tunes like “Color Blind” and “Johanna” are friendly, slightly goofy affairs powered by slick guitar arpeggios, washes of surf-ish guitars and organs, and a rhythm section that keeps things appropriately simple and clean.
