Secret Colours
In The Absence EP
Self-Released; 2010

Guest Contributor: Michael Dallas Miller
There seems to be a two-pronged monster roaming the streets of cold, cold Chicago. Its name is Secret Colors, and it makes a mean sound. The four men and one lady who make up this boot-stomping attack on innocent, eager earlobes present themselves on one hand as rather adorable, complete with cool vibrations, soft voices, spacious guitars and psychedelic sounds. But the band has another side, one that knows how to create a twisting, grunge-ful maze of menacing pop. Each path is good, and each expresses itself beautifully on the In The Absence EP, a fitting follow-up to the freshman self-titled full-length the group released earlier in 2010.
Opening with “In The Absence,” this two-song EP shows what can happen when ocean-side pop is played through the lens of the Midwest, a place this writer has never been, has only heard story of, and only heard stories consisting of words like “cold” and “miserable” and “as hell.” With “In The Absence,” we hear a thick mixture of synthetic sitar and wide-gaping guitars, all brought together by the collective, whispering vocals, saying “close your eyes/open your eyes.” This song is the musty and cold garage outside in the warm, yellow sunlight.

The sunlight on this EP is named “Carry My Soul.” The acoustic guitar and bass bounces and sways, while the band sings in a tired hum, “Oh Lord, I used to know/Exactly where I needed to go/Now it seems I’m stuck in a hole.” While the Great Pop Awakening seems centered in LA, its arms reach all through the US. With Secret Colours, Chicago has a monster for a delegate in the emerging church of sunshine rock-and-roll.
