I’m really not sure what to think about the music of Callers, except that I know that I like the component parts, but I’m supremely confused by how they were arranged and produced. Life Of Love is striking on two distinct levels: 1) the neo-soul vocals of Sara Lucas are huge, captivating, and occasionally steal the show; and 2) the accompanying music, an amalgam of post-punk and jazz, is marked by empty spaces that can be very disconcerting and disorienting. For an idea of what I’m attempting to describe, imagine The xx or The Church playing icy, minimalist art-rock for the voice of Shara Worden (of My Brightest Diamond) or Nico, and then ramp up the ethereal textures.
