What we have here is a fun, bouncy party record, but not quite in the format to which your ears might be accustomed – imagine East Africa getting’ down with the French Caribbean. El Guincho has masterfully crafted an ecstatic collection of influences into one fluid stream designed to get the dancefloor moving and grooving. Of course, if you’re a white person, you might have some trouble situating your body in time with the copious levels of Afro-pop, Jamaican dancehall, and Caribbean percussion that run rampant over Pop Negro. When you factor in the Cumbia-flavored vocal delivery (complete with lyrics sung entirely in Spanish) and guitar licks, then you’ve truly happened upon a record that graciously reclaims all of those international pop flavors that hipster bands have been stealing for the past few years.
