I struggled with how to approach writing a review of this record, because I do respect what Cloudland Canyon attempted to construct on Fin Eaves, but I don’t much like the end result. From start to finish, the band actively attempts to combine shoegaze with chillwave, My Bloody Valentine with Washed Out, but there’s a striking lack of clarity here, and I often found it disorienting. Prodigious chunks of deconstructed pop are borrowed from the likes of Caribou, Delorean, and A Sunny Day In Glasgow, but the nine songs here lack the direction and focus implemented by those other acts. The result is an album of atmospheric, experimental, pop-influenced drone that’s a bit too fragmented and broken apart for my tastes.
