A long-running band with an extensive discography will always be compared against itself first, how the band fits into the current music climate second, and the actual music third. If a band is lucky, it will have a favorable impression amongst fans and critics that enables points one and two to be lumped together. Even then, the songs on the actual album under investigation will usually undergo a nasty exercise in compare-and-contrast that’s right out of a high school English class. It might not be very fair, but it’s the reality of the situation.
