It’s overtly rather easy to peg someone with the tag “sounds like Tom Waits.” Anyone with a decent, warbling baritone singing about the end of the world (or maybe just the end of a really long and tiring day) will earn such a description – i.e. Scarlett Johansson. In reality, it’s actually difficult to evoke the same depth and range emotions as Mr. Waits, mostly because not everyone can so artfully effect such an intense measure of world-weariness, the kind that makes the listener join in the lament, not merely want to give the guy a hug and tell him it’s all going to be OK. And while Dan Zimmerman (much less his PR and label people) is probably tired of hearing people compare his music to that of Tom Waits, I feel that it’s proper to do so.
