To those of us who came of musical age in the late ‘90s, we are more familiar with the term “ska” and all of the horn-based, punky, skanking goodness that came along with the proliferation of such acts. What only a few of ever learned was that bands like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, and Five Iron Frenzy (not to mention the scores of lame copycat acts) were part of the “third wave” of ska music, as the first wave was birthed out of reggae and dub music before borrowing from punk and rockabilly in the second wave before permuting even further into the more familiar third. But the beautiful part to take into account regarding the evolution of music is that it’s quite easy to return to earlier versions of the sound and bring them forward into the present.
