Music journalism regularly walks the very thin line that separates the “next big thing” from the “tried and true,” while often falling willingly headlong into one camp or the other. This is the risk one faces when a prominent aspect of one’s job is to spend time listening to pre-release copies of albums from both established and new artists, hoping to be the person or publication that introduces a great new record to the world. I refer to this as “listening forward” and, while I love having access to music before most people and enjoy having a minor voice in discussing new music, I feel it to be a cause for concern. Is there no joy left this industry anymore? Do we actually like listening to music or are we content with the insider accolades conveyed when we scoop someone else?
